Public buses and trains that travel fixed routes, paratransit in group vans, minibuses and taxis that travel variable routes, taxi services, dial-a-ride services, volunteer services, and ambulettes all are potential transportation options, depending upon your resources and goals.

 

You can meet your transportation needs today and in the event that you are unable to drive by:

  1. Planning in advance;
  2. Understanding available options; and,
  3. Incorporating safe travel habits early.

When considering alternative transportation, remember to ask about cost / fees, pick up and drop locations, available schedules, any eligibility requirements and credentialing. Use this worksheet to prepare.

Public Buses - are generally based on regular operation of transit buses along a route calling at agreed bus stops according to a published public transport timetable.

Trains - Maryland has several major commuter rail systems, including the Baltimore Washington Metro,Light Rail and MARC train service.

Paratransit - is a specialized, door-to-door transport service for people with disabilities who are not able to ride fixed-route public transportation. This may be due to an inability to: board, ride or disembark independently from any readily accessible vehicle on the regular fixed-route system. Minibuses - is a passenger carrying motor vehicle that is designed to carry more people than a multi-purpose vehicle or minivan, but fewer people than a full-size bus.

Private Options:

  • Taxi services: is a type of vehicle for hire with a driver, used by a single passenger or small group of passengers, often for a non-shared ride.
  • On-demand online services (e.g. Uber, Lyft): App based, on-demand, private pay service to obtain rides from drivers who sign up with the service agency.
  • Ambulettes: a specially equipped van for transporting individuals with disabilities or convalescent passengers in non-emergency circumstances.
  • Volunteer services: A team of volunteers drivers use their own vehicles to drive individuals to medical and other essential appointments. Volunteer drivers provide a personalized, free, one-on-one transportation service for appointments.
  • Dial-a-ride: is a shared curb-to-curb transportation service for residents who are 65 years of age with a physician-certified disability that prohibits the use of public transportation.
